The "Hercules" sculpture is a true art treasure that depicts Hercules wearing the famous Nemean Lion headdress. Hercules's first labor, as detailed in Apollodorus’ Bibliotheca, was to slay the Nemean Lion. The skin of the Nemean Lion was impenetrable and so Hercules had to use his immense strength to kill the lion. Hercules used the head of the lion as a heroic headdress and the skin as armor; it being impervious to weapons of war.
In the creation of “Hercules”, the sculptor set out to capture the spirit of a mighty warrior. The Lion headdress and powerful physique are central to the composition of this heroic sculpture.
